Taking on the UULM "Low Carbon Challenge," one of the Carbon Ring circles from the UU Community Church of Sacramento will be talking with its Congressional representative about what kinds of climate change laws are needed. This is just one example of how UUs across California are “putting their principles into action”—both at home and in the public square.
UUs can take a stand to build public and legislative support for fundamental principles needed to address climate change by asking your legislator to sign on to Congressman Waxman’s “Dear Colleague" letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
While much social change is accomplished incrementally, the urgency of climate change requires that we create targets that the best science deems effective. Current CA Representatives who have signed on to the letter include: Berman, Capps, Davis, Eshoo, Farr, Filner, Harman, Honda, Lee, Lofgren, McNerney, Tauscher, Thompson, Tauscher, Schiff, Sherman, Waters, and Waxman.
Since a lack of consensus forced the Liebermann-Warner bill (Climate Change Security Act) to be pulled from consideration recently in the Senate, many UUs and environmentalists are hoping that after the November election, a climate change bill can be passed that is more consistent with what scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change say is needed to avoid the most catastrophic effects of climate change. Click here for more on the debate.
In addition to making sure that climate change legislation is effective, it must also be just. Trillions of dollars are in play, and the lives of the most vulnerable are at stake. See the UUA Washington Office’s evaluation of climate change bills, based on whether they are effective and just.
